Valentine’s Day may not be so lovey-dovey if your marriage is angering you out.
Every married couple experiences conflict, but when a couple has constant, unrelenting marital anger it not only takes a toll on their emotional health, but can impact their physical health as well.
The Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Ted Raddell says the quality of your marriage is important to the quality of your overall health.
Dr. Raddell said, “Headaches, stomach issues, you know, certainly the common things, muscle tension, but if that persists, you have unremitting anger then, you know, it affects our immune functioning and then we’re more vulnerable to all kinds of potential physical problems.”
One recent study links marital conflict and depression to stomach issue while another suggests that strained relationships raise your risk for heart disease.
Dr. Raddell says anger, in general, produces a ‘fight or flight’ response and if it’s activated constantly, it can cause wear and tear on the body.
He says the impact is greatest when relationship anger becomes chronic.
“The longer the time the distrust persists, over the course of months versus weeks, is probably where you’re more likely to see some of those physical symptoms,” said Dr. Raddell.
He encourages couples to seek help sooner rather than later.
When your spouse creates an atmosphere of ’emotional safety’, the nervous system shifts into “rest and digest”mode and all body systems function at their best.
