Managing Anger is important

What we know is that with an increase in protective factors, including strengthening relationships and, most importantly, managing caregiver anger, we can see a decrease in those occurrences.

Anger is a normal part of life. But sometimes it seems like the demands and angeres of parenting just keep building up. However, there are things you can do to stay in control of your life.

Manage your anger. Think about what makes you feel angered each day. If you lower this everyday anger, it will be easier to deal calmly with your children. It also will make it easier to cope with those unexpected things, like illnesses, car trouble, etc.

Support systems are important. For some parents it just seems like there is too much to do each day. Many parents are working multiple jobs, are single and/or co-parenting, going to school and have so many moving parts. You might need to make some changes to your lifestyle.

Talk to your partner or support system about ways to change your routine or share the workload. Is it possible to start your day earlier to build in more time, lay out school clothes or pack lunches the night before?

Don’t have family or friends local? Everyone needs a little support now and then so find other parents that you connect with at your libraries local story time, parent nights at childcare facilities or at a Triple P Seminar.

Establish a routine. For other parents, the hour after everyone comes home from school and work is the most angry part of the day. Put a good routine in place where each person knows what they need to do. Create and post a schedule of the evenings events while setting expectations for your family and children. This will help your evenings to run smoothly.

Make time for yourself. Finally, you should always take some time for yourself to relax or do something you enjoy. Even 30 minutes a day can be enough to help you feel refreshed. Regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle help too. This is important that you have time carved in for yourself. It sounds cliché, but when you as a parent are feeling better, you are able to be more nurturing, calmer and present.
