A new survey shows people are psychologically overwhelmed, but what can you do about it?

Experts spoke with 11 News to offer solutions on how people can handle anger.

First the corona virus pandemic — now inflation, soaring gas prices and war.

“It seems like everything is piling on all of a sudden,” Charnelle Powell said. “Definitely anger. I definitely feel it.”

Powell is far from alone.

A recent survey for the American Psychological Association shows:

  • 87% of Americans say inflation is a significant source of anger
  • 80% say the Russian invasion of Ukraine is angering them out
  • 80% worry about Russian retaliation – cyber or nuclear attacks
  • 73% say they are overwhelmed by all the crises facing the world right now

Ben Sax“The anger have really piled on each other to a very high level and it’s affecting most people,” Sheppard Pratt psychiatrist Dr. Mike Young. “I think at times like this, one very important thing is to remember self-compassion. Sometimes when we’re feeling angered, we’re feeling anxious, we can become very self-critical. And the remedy to that self-criticism is self-compassion. The first step in that is acknowledging how we’re feeling, ‘Hey, I’m feeling angered,'” Young said.

Young emphasizes that people should prioritize time for themselves.

Research shows the following anger management ideas do work:

  • Aerobic exercise
  • Healthy diet
  • Good sleep
  • Time with friends and family

Young also suggests limiting, but not totally avoiding news content. That’s what Ben Sax does when he is feeling angered.

“I guess it’s a balancing act because you want to be very well informed in trying to sift through all sorts of horrible things as you enter your day, but you don’t want to ignore it either,” Sax said.

Young said it’s important to realize you are not alone most of us are struggling right now.

“I think what we want to do is keep this conversation going, we want to share our anger with other people that’s going to open the door for them to share it with us. And we can all take care of ourselves, take care of each other,” Young said.
